Along with about 2,000 others, I returned to the decade of my childhood while attending a concert by The Beach Boys, the phenomenally successful California-based band founded by Wilson brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl along with their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. Of course maybe the band I saw would more accurately be named The Beach Boy because Mike Love is the only original member left touring.
At age 81, however, the dude can still sing and entertain an appreciative crowd. He had some help from a talented band of singers and musicians that included his son Christian on guitar and vocals. Bruce Johnson, who was an early addition, is still in the performing band as well. Dennis passed away in 1983 and Carl died in 1998. Brian is still around but doesn’t tour.
The nostalgic feelings generated by the music were enhanced by the images projected on a big screen above the stage. During each song it often showed pictures of the younger Beach Boys performing the same tunes or mugging for the camera.
Those attending the almost-sold out auditorium who still could get to their feet often came out of their seats when the introductions of hits like Good Vibrations, Get Around, and Fun, Fun, Fun were played. There was even some dancing going on.
The band’s first song was released in 1961 and the hits just kept coming for the following decades. But it was in the 60s that the band really hit its stride. Nine albums were released in three years during that decade. Eight of them reaching the Top Ten and the other just barely missing that mark.
The show I saw at Charlotte’s Belk Theater was a living testament to how enduring and joyful this music was and still is to this day. It really took me back to a groovy time with a cool California vibe.
